Cathy M. Cich, RN, BSN
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Cathy was born in Steubenville, OH and is the daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Cich. She graduated from Steubenville Catholic Central High School in 1973, where she would years later return to work as a School Nurse for 3 years. She graduated from Jefferson Community College (now Eastern Gateway Community College) as an LPN in 1984 and then continued her education in Nursing at Franciscan University of Steubenville where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 1988. Upon graduation, she began her nursing career working at the former St. John Medical Center on the 5th floor. Cathy also served as a Hospice Volunteer beginning in 1985 while she was in Nursing School. Cathy took a huge leap of faith, by leaving her full time position at the hospital and following what she truly believed was a vocation to work in Hospice Nursing. She started in February, 1989 and worked 15 years as a hospice nurse, Professional Relations Coordinator, and Hospice Educator speaking locally as well as nationally in Washington DC at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's Symposium. She also spoke in Omaha, Nebraska on "Communicating with The Dying Patient". She continues to speak to various colleges and Universities in our community or wherever she is requested to speak including civic organizations.
Cathy was honored by Franciscan University as she received the "Fr. Kevin Keelan Alumni Award" in March, 1998. She then was the recipient of the Trinity Health System's "Community Women of the Year 2000 in the Spiritual Category" and then in 2004, Cathy was once again an award from Quinn Memorial AME Church receiving the "Community Person of the Year in Health / Hospice." Cathy has always viewed her passion of working with the dying as a ministry and never as a job. During her career as a hospice nurse, Cathy had what she referred to as a "divinely inspired dream" "One evening I dreamt of a residential hospice building and the sign on the outside of the building stated "Charity Hospice" and under that it had the statement "Where Charity and Love Prevail, There God is Ever Found". It was a dream that I never shared with anyone for years. I wasn't sure what it all meant, but it took almost 9 years to discover that our local community was a growing elderly area, and many elderly people were having a difficult time caring for loved ones at home. They needed a place to go ,where they would be cared for by loving hospice staff with the philosophy of end of life care. This was the beginning of what we now have in our community as Charity Hospice, which began operating on April 24th, 2006. The dream of the Inpatient Residential Facility still remains the goal of Charity Hospice's Board of Trustees.
Cathy resides in Wintersville and is a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Wintersville. She serves on the Advisory Board for the LPN Program at Eastern Gateway Community College and Franciscan University Nursing Advisory Board.
